The cricket community is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Ben Austin, who was taken far too soon in a training accident. Though many of us did not know Ben, we share in the sorrow felt across the cricketing world. Whenever we lose one of our own, we are reminded that our game connects us — through spirit, respect, and love for cricket.
Ben’s passing is a heartbreaking reminder of how precious and fragile life can be, even in the familiar and joyful spaces of the sport we all cherish. As a community, we ask every player, coach, and supporter to take care in and around the nets. Please remain alert when cricket balls are in flight — never turn your back on the nets, and always look out for one another. Safety in these moments can make all the difference.
In honour of Ben, and at the request of his family, as reported through the media, we invite all clubs, players, and supporters to place a cricket bat outside their home or clubhouse, just as we did in memory of Phil Hughes. Let this small act stand as a symbol of unity, respect, and support for Ben’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
Rest in peace, Ben Austin. The entire cricketing family stands with you and your family — now and always.
