The Western Australian cricket community mourns the passing of Brian Waterer, Patron of the South Metropolitan Cricket Association (SMCA) and one of the most influential figures in the history of the game at the grassroots level. His legacy is woven into the fabric of local cricket, where his leadership, passion, and service spanned more than five decades.

Brian served as President of the Fremantle and Districts Mercantile Cricket Association from 1965 to 1982, guiding the organization through a transformative era. His commitment to the SMCA was equally profound, where he held roles as Junior and Senior Vice President before being named Patron—a title that reflected the deep respect he earned across the cricketing community.

A Life Member of the SMCA, the Fremantle and Districts Mercantile Cricket Association, and the Leeming Spartan Cricket Club, Brian was a cornerstone of club and association life. In 2008, Cricket Australia honoured him with the 50-Year Service Award, recognizing his extraordinary dedication to the sport.

The Brian Waterer Shield, named in his honour, stands as a lasting tribute to his impact. It represents not just competition, but the values Brian embodied: integrity, perseverance, and a love for cricket that inspired all who knew him.

Brian Waterer was more than an administrator—he was a mentor, a visionary, and a friend. His influence will continue to be felt in every match played, every young cricketer nurtured, and every club strengthened by his legacy.
